Cycling Agistri island (Saronic Gulf - GREECE)

Agistri island along with Aegina and the neighboring islands consisted of the Kingdom of Aegina of the mythical King Aeakos.

According to Homer, Agistri was called Kekrifalia, which means "adorned head" and appears as an ally of Aegina during the Trojan War.
Tradition notes that visitors amazed by the natural beauty of the island were caught like fish on the hook and lived there for all their lives (Agistri means fish-hook).

Today, only 1.5 hour away from Piraeus by ferry (or faster with flying dolphin) its a small heaven on earth situated at the Saronic Gulf, smothered in plants and trees, with pine trees touching its crystal blue waters. And the best part: until now mass tourism hasn't arrived yet!

The route is a bit less than 20km, starting from Skala where the ferry port is, going through Megalohori, then Drakonera beach, inland to Limenaria village and finally on the best part, Aponisos, before heading back [map by Google maps]

Elevation chart, maximum elevation no more than 100 meters with only two peaks [chart by Bike Route Toaster]

 Departure excitement in Piraeus port

The ferry to Agistri island

Bikes strapped, coffee and ready to go

 Passing by Aegina island

Happy on the ferry (check the guy on the back :D)

Arriving in full green Agkistri island

The welcoming image in Agkistri island port, Skala

Being in a group unfortunately means everybody has to wait for you to take photos

Leaving the villages, on the way to Drakonera beach

The pure joy of riding the bike uphill

Arriving in Drakonera beach we found a free-camping paradise

 Drakonera beach from the sides

Charming

Relaxing under the pine tree shade

Met another friend out of the blue, he was camping there

Ah yes, one more photo of you

Beautiful nature just on the beach

Taking a side walk on the rocks you have another beautiful view, the colors of the sea are so amazingly blue

After some more cycling inland we reached the most beautiful beach of the island, Aponisos. Were shocked with the crystal blue waters, as if the place was not real but a big pool, it looks much more beautiful being there than the photos

There is a very small private islet which is used for tourism, its free to enter but you have to pay if you want to stay on their side of private area

The most interesting thing on the private island was this little goat

Don't know if its really allowed but I went a bit through one part of the private area to manage to get this shot, on the right is the area which is free to swim, the crystal clear blue waters are unreal

Very happy inside the endless blue

Going uphill through a horseshoe bend on the way back

Short stop in Megalohori village for rest and supplies

Decided to take the last ferry back home in order to catch the sunset and some of the atmosphere in Skala

Twilight zone was very beautiful with a big moon on the sky

Chilling in Skala before we take our ferry back

Everybody very happy with our bicycles posing for one final shot before we go take our ferry (which was late one hour) :D Agkistri is very much worth to visit, with or without a bicycle!!
