Iceland (2006) ~ 07. Laugavegur trek Day2

Day 2: Hrafntinnusker to Alftavatn (12km)
Woke up around 07.00 from my excitement, had a look outside, everything was covered with snow but there was no rain! Breakfast and around 08.00 we depart, our destination today is Alftavatn which is 12km away.
My backpack is on the table and we are ready to depart.

Leaving back Hrafntinnusker hut, it was a great place to rest.

The track descends to cross a stream then bounces over parallel rhyolite ridges and snow bridges before ascending steeply to a ridge studded with hot springs and fumaroles. At some point after crossing this field it started snowing. Going through the snow bridges we pass one by one, there is the danger of collapsing due to excessive weight.

Wanted to have a photo to really remember I was there in that amazing place.

Slowly slowly we were reaching the top of the plateau, we were rewarded with an amazing view of the Alftavatn valley.

One of the many stream crossings that day.

Now we could clearly see our next hut down there! The route from here rolls up and down over ridges of descending altitude before dropping steeply from the Jokultungur Ridge into the Alftavatn valley. You'll have a glorious view of Tindfjallajokull, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull (glaciers), as well as the many volcanic formations spread out below.

Descending the temperature was getting warmer, was time to remove some of the extra clothes layers.

A small river crossing before we reach the valley.

Yeap, we came down from there.

Alftavatn hut, our resting point for the day.

Reaching the hut we relax for a bit and then since the weather is perfect we decide to go up the small mountain near the hut to check the views.
Had to cross this small river to get to the mountain.

The views from the top were really stunning!

 The Alftavatn valley and lake.
Photos from the top of the small mountain near our hut.

While I was amazed with the view a butterfly landed just next to me.

Back to the hut as the weather changed, pretty windy and started drizzling. I feel stupid enough for carrying my tent and an inflating mattress with me and not camping until now, I was sure I will camp out in this hut in order to save the money but being so tired and the weather conditions deteriorating I decided to sleep in once again since there is space for one more person. An Icelandic girl is running this hut as well, they communicate with all the huts through the radio. Shower is kr300 for five minutes, I decide to skip. David, the Swiss guy, is brave enough to camp outside! Dinner and relaxing, we meet a nice couple which would tag along with us from tomorrow, Wilma from the Netherlands and Timo from Germany. They came all the way from Landmannalaugar (our starting point) today in order to take advantage of the good weather!
Well, we were halfway through, we have covered 24km in two days with a relaxed pace, 30km more to go until Thorsmork, another two days of trekking.
